A - Why Personal Style is Important
Developing a Personal Style is one of the most difficult things to achieve in fine art photography. At the same time, it is also one of the most important things to achieve. Why? Because if you do not have a personal style, your work is no different from the work of other photographers. The locations you photograph can be photographed by other photographers. The gear and software you use can be purchased by any other photographer. Even the techniques you use can be learned by other photographers.
If you sell your work and you do not have a personal style, you must sell on the basis of price because if customers cannot see a difference between your work and the work of other photographers, they will buy the lowest priced work.
Eventually, the only thing that truly separates your work from the work of other photographers is your personal style. The question then becomes: what is personal style and how do I acquire one? Those two questions are the questions I set to answer in this new tutorial: the Alain Briot Personal Style Master Class Workshop on DVD.
This is the 5th Mastery Workshop on DVD. It is also the first one to focus on personal style. My previous Mastery Workshops on DVD (the Printing, Composition, Marketing and Adjustment Layers Mastery Workshops on DVD) focused on the techniques I use to create my photographs. Those techniques are very important, but they are not what creates a personal style.
B - A focus on the Beaux Arts
What creates a personal style is a focus on studying photography as an art form. This is because Personal Style is an artistic endeavor, not a technical endeavor. In my career, I studied art before I studied photography. This is because I attended the Academie des Beaux Arts in Paris. There I studied painting, drawing and the history of art. I studied photography after graduating from the Beaux Arts. Today, I combine my artistic training with my photographic studies. The result is the work I have become known for: a blend of art and technique, a combination of my Beaux Arts studies and my photographic studies. This is why I called my business Beaux Arts Photography. This name is a testimony to the importance that the Beaux Arts have played in the development of my Personal Style. I am fully aware that I would not have a personal style if I had not attended the Beaux Arts.
When I decided to create the Personal Style Master Class, over 1 year ago, I decided that the goal of the course was to provide you with the same training that I received when I attended the Beaux Arts. To achieve this goal I listed all the subjects I studied at the Beaux Arts and featured them in the Master Class. The result are 19 sections, each divided in several sub sections, whose goal is to provide you with knowledge that is not available anywhere else in the field of photography. The goal is to provide you with the opportunity to 'study' at the Beaux Arts.
Trying to develop a personal style on your own, without guidance, can be very frustrating. To prevent this I designed a very thorough, step by step curriculum that takes you through the process of developing a personal style one step at a time. You can complete this process at your leisure, by taking as long as you want, and by studying anywhere you want. The great thing is that you can study in the comfort of your home, or anywhere you like, without having to travel and without incurring travel costs and scheduling challenges.
My goal was also to adapt the knowledge I acquired at the Beaux Arts to photography. It would not do you much good to learn how painters create paintings. While it may be interesting, it would not help you create photographs that demonstrate a unique personal style. To do so you need to know how I apply the knowledge I acquired at the Beaux Arts to fine art photography. This is exactly what I do in the Master Class.
The goal of the Master Class is to teach you how to create work that you will be proud of. Work that people recognize as yours without seeing your name on it or knowing who created it at first. Work that is valued as highly as the work of well known painters, photographers and other important visual artists. In short, the goal of the Master Class is to help you reach the next step with your photography, the most important step, and that is creating work that is uniquely yours and that is recognized as such by others.

2 - You get over 25 hours of audio & video recordings in which I explain the process of developing a personal style. In doing so I cover the fundamental aspects of art, the most important art movements so that we learn which art movement our work is close to, the steps we need to complete to develop a style, the process of working on a project (a central aspect of developing a style), how to present your work and complete your project, and much more.
The audio, video, written and
other materials featured on the DVD are carefully organized in a step by step fashion to make studying easy. You can complete each step at your leisure and move around from step to step as you please. You can also return to a previous step, or move to a later step, at your leisure

4 - You receive a color wheel to help you study color palettes and color harmonies.
The color wheel is used to study color palettes and color harmonies. How to use the color wheel is taught in the course. These concepts, plus how to use a color wheel in your work, are taught in the Master Class DVD in the section on Color. I use the same color wheel myself, both in my studio and in the field when photographing.
5 - You receive a signed Fine Art Companion Print
A matted and signed Fine Art Companion Print of Mono Lake Dusk, one of my favorite recent images, is included in the Personal Style Master Class package. The value of this print if purchased separately is $295. This Companion Print is printed, mounted, matted and packaged in the exact same museum presentation as my larger prints.
I include it in this package so you can compare the image quality on screen to that of the actual print. This is necessary because nothing is as beautiful as an actual Fine Art Print. Everything else is a reproduction. This collectible print will also be an addition to your Fine Art collection. This photograph demonstrates my personal style in regards to color palette. The color palette choices I made for this image are described in the DVD in detail.
6 - You receive the Death Valley Fine Art Summit Audio CD
This CD features the recording of the presentations I gave at the 2011 Death Valley Fine Art Summit. There are 4 presentations, each one hour long. The handouts that Summit Participants received in Death Valley are also included. It's like being at the summit plus you can listen to these presentations anytime you want anywhere you like. The CD features mp3 files and will play in any CD player. You can also download the mp3 files to any digital audio device (iPod, iPad, mp3 player, phone, etc.).

As with all Mastery Workshops on DVD, access to the Owners Update Area Page is available for the Personal Style Master Class Workshop on DVD. The Personal Style Master Class Workshop on DVD features the exact same knowledge as my two day Personal Style Master Class Seminar. To be fair to Seminar Participants, the Personal Style Master Class Workshop on DVD is priced similarly to the Personal Style Master Class Seminar.
However, there are advantages to studying with the Personal Style Master Class DVD. First, you do not need to travel and therefore you save on travel expenses, lodging, car rental and other incidental expenses. Second, you can study the material at your own pace instead of having to absorb this immense amount of material in just two days.
