Online Portfolios

The online portfolio process
Here is the process I follow to create my online portfolios:

First, this process is fundamentally different from the process I use to create my print portfolios. The goal of the print portfolios is to create world-class works of art. The creation of a print portfolio takes years of work because the images are selected among hundreds of top-class images and no effort or expense is spared.

Second, online portfolios are created relatively quickly and the selection of images is much less severe.

Third, I often select images for my print portfolios by editing the content of my online portfolios. In other words I use the online portfolios as a starting point for my print portfolios. As a result only a small number of images in my online portfolios make it into my print portfolios.

Fourth, sometimes different versions of the same image are featured in an online portfolio. This is because I have not yet made up my mind about which image I like best. When such is the case I use the online portfolios as an opportunity to view these images together. This approach helps me make a final selection later on.

Fifth, the images in my online portfolios represent a larger variety of subjects than those featured in my print portfolios. Photographs of cars, or bicycles, or photographs taken during non-photography-related events (to name but a few of my personal interests), will probably not make it to a print portfolio. However I like to feature these images here because they show aspects of my life that I enjoy sharing and that are important to me.

Sixth, online portfolios are dated using the publication date, not the creation date. For example a photograph created in 2017 but published in 2018 will be dated 2018. This is why some of the portfolios below feature images created the previous year. I follow this approach for reason of simplicity and clarity. It would be both challenging and confusing to add images to previous years portfolios. It would also be difficult to know where new images are being added.
