Alain Briot Print of the Month Collection
Print of the Month Photograph Number Thirty Two
Navajo Sandstone Wall, Monument Valley
(copyright logo not present on actual fine art print)
After unpacking your photograph, "Canyons of the San Juan 1," I was blown away by the colors, highlight, shadow detail, and the overall dynamic range of the image. The image posted on your web site comes nowhere near to expressing the brilliance and beauty of the actual print. It is simply superb and I am very glad that I chose this one.
The presentation, framing, matting, and backing were also first rate. The frame complements the image very nicely. The print was very well packaged to prevent any damage and it arrived as promised. If we ever move I’d like to hire Natalie to help with the packing ;-)
All in all Alain, a first rate job all the way around! I will look forward to displaying this image to friends and visitors.

The Photograph
The 32nd Alain Briot Print of the Month Collection photograph is titled Navajo Sandstone Wall, Monument Valley.
Monument Valley is one of the most visually impressive places on Earth. I have been there countless times and each time I find new images that I have not seen before. It is all a matter of freeing myself from the overwhelming presence of the Mittens, the two rock formations which visually define Monument Valley, and which are named for their similarity with mitts, gloves with provision for only the thumb, all the other fingers being housed in a single, large "pocket".
Anyways, it is hard to get away from the Mittens or from the other landmarks of Monument Valley, including the Three Sisters, Yei Bei Chei, Train Rock, Eagle Rock or again The Rabbbit Ears to name but a few of the many named formations.
In contrast the subject of this photograph is not named, at least not to my knowledge. It is certainly not on the Gouldings Tour of Monument Valley (Gouldings is the nearest Trading Post, offering tours in Monument Valley regularly). Rather, it is one of the many canyon walls that one passes by on its way to somewhere else. I chose to stop there and make it the subject of a photograph. In doing so I created an image which location may be just about impossible to determine if it wasn't for the title I gave it. This canyon wall could be anywhere. And yet, this exact formation exists only in Monument Valley.
To me what I like most about this image are the colors. The reds, the yellows and the blues, the blues being reflections of the open sky on the black areas of Desert Varnish that partially cover the sandstone wall. These colors remind me of colors found in Navajo rugs, or Navajo jewelry, expecially inlaid jewelry. Seeing this wall gave me an insight on where the Navajos find inspiration for their work, be it weaving, jewelry, paintings, or other. They find their inspiration in the landscape they inhabit. They find inspiration in their land, in the clouds and in the earth, and in the canyon walls that tower over their hogans.
The Print
This photograph is available framed and unframed. It is hand signed on the mat and the print. The frame is a handmade Mahogany Finish Frame. The moulding is truly magnificent and does emphasize the beauty of this image. The photograph I took of the moulding show very closely how beautiful this presentation is. However, these pieces looks much better in reality than a web photograph can show! You just won't believe your eyes when you receive yours. All the framing materials used are Museum Quality, archival supplies. All my work is guaranteed for life in regard to fading and damage caused by framing materials.
Framed pieces are delivered in a stunning mahogany finish frame.
